Dear Jefferson County Growers!
Jeff Co Growers is a network of farmers producing food, medicinal plants, flowers and fiber for the community. We’re gathering to make connections and grow grower relationships.
We are excited to announce the next stage of growth for our budding JeffCo Growers Network! The Chimacum Center called together a Local Growers meet up in the Spring of 2022 to stimulate conversation around shared excitement, needs and concerns. This event included presentations by the Clallam Growers Collective and inspired local farmers to organize. We followed that up with an invitation to explore how to organize the abundance of wonderful feedback. At our development meeting in May, 2022 a group of growers gathered and honed in on the collective call for more in-person gatherings, as well as an online hub for connecting, sharing/seeking resources and forming initiatives! Here is what we came up with in response:
• Rotating Monthly Grower Potlucks: The hope for these gatherings is a chance for local Growers to simply connect, socialize, build relationships, and perhaps begin to discuss some potential opportunities for collaboration and collective action! Work Party Signups/Planning and a Needs/Has Classifieds will be live.
• Google Drive, an online hub with Resources and Initiatives folders for a variety of categories (Land Access, Labor/Volunteers, Funding, etc), as well as the Needs/Has Classifieds, Work Party Signup Sheet, Booklists, Newsletter list, and more!
• Discord Server, as a casual place to remotely tune into, contribute to and expand upon conversations, questions, ideas, initiatives, etc. between in person gatherings. This app may be foreign to some, but it is an extremely intuitive, secure, free online messaging system built for this exact purpose of emergent, collective cooperation.
Moving forward we are also planning to shift email communication to a listserv dedicated to the Growers Network. If you are a Jefferson County Grower/Farmer and would like to receiving updates regarding potlucks, work parties, resource opportunities, etc. and to join the discussion on Discord, please reach out and introduce yourself.
Email us at: jeffcogrowers@chimacumcenter.org. We will get you connected!
Meanwhile, please spread the word to other local growers* who may be interested and invite them to join the list as well! While this is grass-roots farmer-founded effort, The Chimacum Center will support communications and admin with the network as things evolve.
*We realize that other community members may be interested in being a part of this conversation, but for the time being we hope to prioritize this space for local growers specifically. The focus of the Network is to bolster the resilience and interconnectivity of our region's growers, for the sake of the entire community and the land.
With gratitude,
JeffCo Growers
